Is Phorum a good choice?

Hi there,
I am wondering which forum manager I should pick. Phorum looks great, but there are more an more choices around.
Does Phorum run on modern systems (Ubuntu/Debian in 2018, php 7 etc.)? Is it well customizable, themes, modules?

PHP 7 has introduced severe incompatibilities with respect to PHP 6. Phorum does not seem to work with PHP 7. I have similar issues with other tools. Otherwise, it works well on modern distribution (I used it on Arch Linux).
