Blocking Spamers

Blocking Spamers

Hi,

I use version 5.1.16a. It works well so I don't wish to upgrade (Like the Yankees says : if it ain't broken, don't fix it!).

Here is my problem. I have a lot of Chinese Spamers that actually register account and spam my forum. They go into the trouble of creating real email and validating there registration then post one or two messages that I flush quickly and neutralize there account. Then they start over again. Wasted there time does not seem to be an issue for them.

I know a solution. If I could have an add on module that could quarantine let say the first 10 message of any new members, the Spamers would be unable to post any message scrap on my forum.

Does such a module exist ? If not, can someone make one ? I'm willing to pay for it.

Thanks for you help,

Yves

I thought there was a module like that but I can't find it.
I won't develop for 5.1 anymore though, even when getting payed.
There were a lot of things fixed since 5.1 and also lots of security improvements.

Module Spam Hurdles works very well.

Hi Pat,

I already use it for registration. I was using the "Solve a simple math question". I just change it for a Captcha image.

I don't like the idea to use it for all messages. It's like punishing everybody because of the actions of a few. The idea of moderating the first's few messages of a new user is much better.

What about a module that automatically check or uncheck the MODERATE MESSAGE or MODERATE USER button ?

Yves

Hi Yves,

the Spam Hurdles Module is very sophisticated it does much more than just a CAPTCHA and you don't have to use a CAPTCHA for posting messages, it's up to your configuration settings.

Well a I said, I use it already but it does not stop these particular SPAMMER who probably do it manually (not with a robot).

That why I still believe that a module that allow the admin to automatically moderate the first few message from a new user would definitely stop these guys.

I already use the USER RANK MODULE, which allow me to pop up different icone as user post more messages. The newbe get a fist icone that last for ten message. It would be great to ad a moderate fonction to that module,

Anyone car to make it? I would pay you...

Thanks,

Yex

You could use the Content Restrictions Module ( [www.phorum.org] ) which is for phorum 5.2.

I don't know but I really doubt it.
As I said before, 5.1 is totally outdated.

I know Thomas but as I said, I can't update it the version myself and make sure everything is working properly when done. The guy that use to care of the forum it is gone or dead... :-( We're non profit and no money to hire a full time programmer...

I'm currently browsing the list of add-on for 5,1 version and found two add-on that could work together.

Register To Group, written by you.

This will allow me to automatically ad new user to a specif moderated group.

&

Moderated User Group, written by Joe Curia

This module allow me to create groups that will be always moderated such as Newbie and Asshole... :D

It's not exactly what I as looking for but it would achieve what I wanted. I will keep looking.

They were made for 5.2. No promises that they'll work for 5.1.

Indeed they don't !

Hi Thomas,

I tried the Restriction Module you proposed and it seems to be working :D

Is there a French language file for it so the error message is translated when my users are on the French side of the forum?

If not, what can I do to translate it?

Thanks,

Yves

However, I found a bug or text error in the message.

If we set to "-1" to disallow any hyperlink, we get this message:

Sorry, unregistered users may not post more than -1 hyperlink(s)

It should read : Sorry, unregistered users may not post any hyperlink(s).

I also get other code posted such as :

num_hyperlinks = '1' | num_bbcodelinks = '0' | num_wwwlinks = '0' | num_mailtolinks = '0' | num_raw_email_addresses = 0 | subscriber = '0)

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks,

Yves

I didn't write that module so I can't give support about it.
You should ask that in the thread of the module so that the author has a chance to get a information about your question.

Ok Thomas,

But can you tell me why I get an error message when I attempt to translate the language file ?

Namely this one that appear at the very top of my forum :

mais votre message est plus grand que la limite permise pour un usager.' ); ?>
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/yjulien/public_html/voile/forumvav32/mods/content_restrictions/lang/french.php:21) in /home/yjulien/public_html/voile/forumvav32/tmp/tpl-membres-header-toplevel_stage2-1cc0b2d7aaf8743964725bc839468e17.php on line 5

I have attach the file. Note that if I simply rename the english.php into french.php, there is no error message. It's only when I actually translate it.

Any idea why? This happen often when I translate other language files as well...

Yves

that is because you have lots of empty lines and spaces after the closing ?> characters.
Just delete the
?>
at the end and you should be fine. Nowadays php files don't need to be explicitly closed.
