Specify groups at runtime?

We are interested in finding a way to alter or specify which groups a user is part of at runtime.
This is because group membership is determined by a set of conditions in an outside application.

Rather than have a system which updates group access any time one of these conditions changes,
is there a way we can add a hook to the function which gets available groups for a certain user?

What would be the easiest way to implement this?

I don't have time currently to dive into it (got visitors at home), but you should start by looking at the phorum user API. In that code (include/api/user.php) you can find several hooks that are also in the phorum_api_user_get() function. I'm not sure if you can supply the groups like you need it to. If not, then we might have to modify that layer a bit to supply the functionality, since it sounds useful to me.
