Joomla and Phorum integration

Hi,

Does anybody have a step by step guide to getting Phorum working with Joomla.

I know there is an embedded module for this but i can't seem to get it working. I followed the "simple" intsructions on the Joomla forum - http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,42735.0.html - but I'm not a coder and it seems that I have to change some .php files but I'm not sure which ones. Is there a simple solution to this or does one have to get his hands dirty with some php.

So far i have:

Installed Phorum independently - success
installed embedded module and activated it - success

Not sure what to do next

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I think this would be perfect for my site as i'm currently running fireboard which is just too big for my purposes. my site is www.scottmason.co.uk.SEFG - although i am trying to install the Phorum on my testing server first.

Thanks

The facility for attachments can be configured in the settings for each forum. There you can allow for file types and file sizes. The user file upload does not have any real purpose in the core Phorum installation (besides the obvious function of storing files on the server) but modules could use this. For example, the avatar module uses the user file storage for storing the avatar image.

One last question, i hope. I have got the setings to allow users to upload files including images, but there is no option on this on the forum front end. is there a reason for that.

I included two templates with the module. "embed_default" is a moderation of the standard default template. "embed_phorum" is one that I tailor made for fitting into small spaces (that one can be seen in action on chanh's [www.opensourcecms.com]). If you look at the settings.tpl file for that last template, you'll even find some options for tweaking what gets displayed, which can be used to make it fit even more.

So for space: go for embed_phorum and edit settings.tpl to your likings.

Hi,

Thanks,

What is a single glue script? do i have to do anything with this:

Phorum now fully expects to be run from within a master application.
A single glue script is needed to run all Phorum code. A simple
example glue script can be found in:

connectors/stub_example/index.php

Important in the glue script is the creation of a PhorumConnector object,
which is put in $PHORUM_CONNECTOR. This is actually the most important
part for embedding Phorum into another application, because this class
describes how to fit Phorum in there. The connector for this example
glue script can be found in:

connectors/stub_example/connector.php

After that, the glue script will have to include the worker script:

run_phorum.php

Are these instructions that i have to follow? I'm totally confused.

Thanks

I didn't do much with it. I just had to modify the Phorum path in the code, install the component and link it to a menu. That's what I needed to get it running.

Please do post to the joomla forum, because it probably is something obvious with the component not providing the data that should go in the body part correctly. Joomla component writers are welcome to join this thread and help figuring out what needs to be done to make this work.

thanks for all your help guys however, i'm stuck now as im not a coder and have no idea how to do this. I'll try over at the Joomla forum to see if there is a solution. In the meantime if you come up with a solution, please let me know.

How did you guys get it to work with Joomla, was it a simple install or did you have to do a bit of playing around?

thanks again

It's not really the template. In the source code of the page, you can see that the connector's body output is really in front of everything. So it's Joomla, not capturing the printed body data from the connector, but showing it immediately. So the question is if there is a different way of providing the body data for a component. Please check for that with Joomla people / docs. If the data can be sent to Joomla through a function or variable, then it's easy to change the printing to doing the apparent right thing.

hi, I tried it with a few different templates, even the default joomla template and it's still the same so i don't think it's a template problem.

My site use mostly div in my template too and phorum work just fine in it.

There might be some missing tag that surface when you enable phorum to your site.
Try to run through the validation to see where is the possible problem with your template.

That looks like Joomla does not catch the data that is printed from the connector as the body data. In my setup that did work, but maybe the Joomla people changed things a bit. At the conference they already warned us that the component mechanics could change.

So for your site, it looks like the connector needs a bit of work, to send the Phorum body to the Joomla framework correctly.
