Help with templates name

Hi,
I know that header.tpl and footer.tpl controls the header and the footer of our pages.
But what about the other template files?

Can you tell me what do list.tpl or read.tpl do ? In which case do they take part ?

Which template could be associated to the body of our pages ?

What are the main "tpl" files (if I want to customize them) ?

list*.tpl are for list views (in a list of messages), read*.tpl files for the read views (when reading a message), index*.tpl for the list of forums and alike.
I guess the names itself are mostly self explaining.
