Template: Tabbed Emerald May 30, 2008 02:08PM |

This template allows you to create a number of forum folders and display them as tabs rather than all on one long page. It is based off of the Emerald template and uses the same color scheme with some slight alterations. Please note that this template only works if you utilize the folder system and are using the flat structure to display your forums and folders on the index page.
I have attached two screenshots which show a sample forum similar to the phorum.org site if it were to use this template. One shows a single row of tabs and the other demonstrates how a second row would look if there were too many tabs to fit in one row.
This is a first release so please let me know if you find any bugs and I will work on them promptly.
Installation and Usage:
Extract this template into your templates folder. Be sure you have setup your phorum as forums within folders and that you are using the flat structure to display your forums and folders on the index page. You can also add one further layer with forums within folders within folders. The second set of folders would appear in the forum list for their parent folder.
There are no variables you need to change, however you may do so in the settings.tpl file if you wish. The default minimum width is set to 800px. This allows the tabs to be displayed without looking awkward on a smaller screen. If you change this figure, you should also change the maximum row length as this determines the number of tabs that can fit on a row.
This template supports three rows of tabs. The row lengths are based on the number of characters in the names of your folders. For example, if you have four folders named "Folder 1", "Folder 2", "Folder 3", and "Folder 4", then your row length would be 32, or well within the default 90. However, if you were to have "A Forum Collection Folder 1", "A Forum Collection Folder 2", "A Forum Collection Folder 3", and "A Forum Collection Folder 4", then you would have 108 characters, which would cause the template to split the tabs into two rows. This template automatically staggers the tabs so that the bottom row is the largest. In this last example, the last two tabs would be on the second row, not just the last tab. This is done by taking the number of characters and dividing them by the number of rows, then making that new number the maximum row length. Using the example above, the new row lengths would be 54 characters. If you do not want to follow this method, you can set your own row length to create your own staggering system.
If you have any questions on the installation and use of this template, please post them here.
Todo:
- Add support for the Easy Color Scheme Manager module.
- Add features as requested or as they pop into my head.

nice job with the template, very useful in that readers are more tempted to move around the forum since the major categories are always staring them in the face.
i'm having a couple issues tho . . . breadcrumb trail isn't working, neither does more than 1 layer deep, which would seem to be related.
your doc states the conditions for proper working:
the only settings item i could find in this regard was Global Settings > General Settings > How to Display Forums and Folders on the Index Page. i have used the folder structure (not virtual) to organize the system, so for exampl i hav a General folder with Announcements, Bull and Help forums.
however, if i nest a folder in the General folder, it is listed in the body with the other forums, but is unlinked. it's like it's TRYING to tab it, but it doesn't quite work.
now, even if this was a caveat of using the tab system, that you could only go 1 layer deep, that'd be just fine . . . it's still got plenty of utility.
[edit] oh yeah breadcrumb just now looking i see it's commented out. . . nevermind (=

Thanks that is exactly why I put this template together. No need to scroll and scroll and scroll to see everything that is going on.Quote

Yeah, for some reason I don't really like the idea of breadcrumbs and thought they were even less necessary in this template. I left them in the code so that they could be enabled by others that prefer them.Quote

The template is setup to go two layers deep, the first being the tabs, the second showing up after the forums in the first folder as you described. Do you have a forum in the second layer folder? Is it set as visible? On my test site a forum in a folder in a folder did show up fine as per the screenshot attached with "Official Forums" (Folder) -> 4 Forums & "How About One More Folder" (Folder) -> "And one last forum" (Forum). There may be better ways to do the second layer and I'm open to suggestions. I do think this template works best with only a single layer of folders though.

ok i think i see . . . i misunderstood . . .
glancing at the pics, i thought that the top row of tabs was a top heirarchy. i thought that if you click one of those tabs it would do 2 things
1) show the 2nd row of tabs for the nested folders
2) in the table below, list the forums in the tab you clicked.
but i'm realizing now that what your pics show is 1 row of tabs wrapped to 2 rows. considering THAT, my phorum behaves exactly as you just described it. while nested tabs would be "cool" it could be a confusing and unwieldy interface. i think what you've done is absolutely perfect.
A.O.K. then. thanks for responding.
