Usability guidelines tell to not force opening links in new windows. A lot of users get irritated by it (and I am one of them). With nowadays browsers, it is better to leave full control to the user who can decide on his own how a link should be opened and if the current site should be left or not. The standard options are:

Click - open in same window
Shift + Click - open in new window
Ctrl + Click - open in new tab
