Using Phorum with Mailman and Plesk 2.5 HOWTO

First let me say I cannot be responsible for any problems that arise from the use of these guidelines. They worked for me, but I am not a Linux or security expert so there may be problems I am have not noticed.

1) follow the Mailman HOWTO found at:
[forum.plesk.com]

This HOWTO is excellent and works well. Follow it to a "T" and it will work.

2) Configure Mailman for your needs and ensure it works.

3) Get and install Phorum:

Follow the instructions in the /docs directory for the install. The setup script
works great. Please use the "secure" script for the sake of your server. :-)

You may also want to consult the HOWTO by Brian Moon at:

**** Side note
I set Mailman so that all user subscriptions must be approved and
I have left the Phorum open to public posting but it will be placed in a members only area so only members can enter the phorum area to post. You may want to do things differently and will have to play with the settings to get things right.

4) In the "Edit Forum:" area of the Phorum admin set things the way you want. I used "Public" for security and no moderator.

The "Email All Posts To:" and "Return Email Address:" need to be the Eamil address you use to send posts to the mail list.

5) The .qmail files are automatically generated by a script you will find in the Mailman HOWTO mentioned above. You will need to be sure the .qmail file you post to has CHMOD 600. In this file put on the first line:
|preline /usr/local/mailman/mail/wrapper post post_to_user_name

On the second line put:
|preline /usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/path_to_phorum/scripts/phorummail.php forum=1 path=/usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/path_to_phorum

**** Note
1)Each "|preline" needs to be on it's own line not multiple lines!
2) No trailing "/"

6) The first line of phorummail.php should read:
#!/usr/local/bin/php -q

7) you will have to make a sym link from /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock to
/tmp/mysql.sock

Well I think that is it. Thanks to everyone that helped:

If this does not work or you have suggestions please let me know. - Chris

For getting rid of HTML tags in the posts please see the following thread:

You can use pipe the output of stripmime.pl to the mail list by adding /usr/local..../stripmin.pl in front of the /usr/local/..../mailman... of the first line of the .qmail file.

Enjoy! It's time for a beer!
