Bug: word curl

Bug: word curl
January 15, 2005 06:58AM
I'm running version 3.3.2a and just discovered a strange bug. If the word curl is in a message it won't post. curly is OK. curls is OK. curl with quotes "curl" is OK. curl with a period at the end is ok ( curl. ).

How strange!

Has anyone run into this? Any solutions?

Thanks,
Russ

what means "won't post"? does it display an error-message?
Phorum doesn't do anything different to that word so it must be some other thing.

Hi Thomas --

Thank you for your response.

Yes it does, the only time I've seen it, running this board for over
3 years at around 30,000+ posts:

You don't have permission to access /php/phorum/post.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.33 Server at www.beardcommunity.com Port 80
***********************************************************************

The error is repeatable and consistent. Type just the word 'curl'
in a message. Post it. Error. If the word 'curl' is followed by any
character, no problem. As a further test, I put just the word curl
in an empty message with a hyphen after it: curl- , that will re-post OK.
Then re-edit the message and remove the hyphen. That will post OK. I
have done many many tests on this and the results are consistent.

Wonder what. Could it be somewhere in the source where the string "curl"
can be found hundreds of times?

I can give you a test account if you would like to see this behavior.

And in closing, I realize the version I'm using is old. So I don't expect much
assistance. The only thing keeping me upgrading is that the latest version
of Phorum no longer uses the threaded view (though I've seen some hacks
here that get close); but instead uses a flat view all the other popular
boards (phpBB, vBulletin etc). The threaded view of Phorum 3 is unique
among all modern bulletin boards. None other have it.

I guess its something in the server-configuration trying to disallow spiders (curl is a tool to retrieve webpages/files by http/ftp).

completely wrong. phorum5 supports threaded view without any problems. if you mean the tree-like pictures, yeah there is a module which brings them (back).

oh and btw. phorum can't generate error-messages like above, these are generated by the webserver.
ask your host/isp about it.

That sounds right; didn't even consider that possibility.

As for the threaded views; I'll do some more searching
here to see if I can find an example
of what threaded views look like in Phorum 5 compared
to Phorum 3.

Thanks for the years of great support here!

This problem which I first reported nearly a year ago is solved.

The problem with posting the word "curl" was due to the provider
using the Apache module, mod_security, which will not allow the
word in form post to avoid exploitation of the Perl curl command.

It has nothing at all to do with Phorum.
