Phorum 5.1.25 barfed on itself, upgrade isn't going so well

I've been running phorum 5.1.25 for eons now. OK, so I've gotten a little (lot) lax on updating the phorum software.

All was running well until about a week ago, and then it started barfing on itself with a ton of "undefined index" messages:

If I run the sanity checks,they all fly through as green. But obviously I have a problem, I just don't know where. It looks like something needs to be rebuilt, but if anyone could give me a push in the right direction, I'd be tremendously grateful!




In an attempt to solve the problem, I decided to do a trial upgrade to the current version of phorum (5.2.15a). I copied the phorum database to an entirely new database to start, just in case things didn't go perfectly right. Then I installed the new phorum software in a separate directory structure, and updated conf.php to point to the new database.

I hit the admin page, and went through 40 upgrade steps OK. After that, I did the sanity check, and it passes all green.

However, when I try and use it, I get... el zilcho.




I guess I'm stuck; I can't get my old install of phorum working, and a new install with the old database isn't happy either. Just to be clear, I'm absolutely 100% not surprised that the upgrade didn't work, I was just hoping that maybe some magic would happen and phorum would heal itself.


So I'm looking for options; either fixing the old one or getting the new version to run are both acceptable options. (Or fixing the old one, with the proviso that I need to upgrade, is also cool.)

On the running forum, it looks like the index page has no language file available. Check your settings in the admin to see what default language is configured. Maybe the language setting is pointing to a language file that does not exist or is unreadable for the webserver.
If I click through to the forum messages, then things are okay it seems.

Turned out not to be a language file, but apparently something with our custom template. I reverted back to the standard template and everything started working again.

Thanks for the push in the right direction!

(Now to figure out what went wrong with the template, then upgrade to the latest phorum!)

btw. the 5.1 template(s) won't work with 5.2.

Ah, looks like there's no point in fixing the old template then, I'll just start off fresh after the upgrade. Thanks!
