Module: Mailing List

[b]Module: Mailing List[/b]
[b]Version: 1.6.1[/b]
[b]Author: Oliver Riesen [/b]

Sends new topics to one or more forum specific mailing lists (for example managed by Majordomo or Mailman).

Tested on version 5.2.21

[b]License:[/b]

Free to use, modify, or redistribute this code so long as I am given credit for the original development somewhere. This code comes with absolutely no warranty.

[b]Requirements:[/b]

Minimum Phorum version: 5.2.21.

If you want to mail post attachments you have to install and enable the Send Mail Through SMTP Module which is part of the core distribution of Phorum.

[b]Installation:[/b]

1. Unpack the archive.

2. Move the directory "mailinglist" to the directory "mods" within your Phorum installation. Don't change the directory name!

3. Login as administrator in Phorum's administrative interface and go to the "Modules" section.

4. Enable the module "Mailinglist".

5. Go to the settings screen for the module to add email addresses for the receiving mailing lists.

[b]Module settings:[/b]

[center][img]http://www.phorum.org/phorum5/file.php/62/4987/mailinglist-settings.jpg[/img][/center]

[u]Use system settings for stripping HTML and BBcode [tags]?[/u]

If this option is marked all HTML and BBcode [tags] are stripped from the body depending on the "General Settings".

Default value is checked.

[u]Use individual FROM addresses[/u]

If this option is marked you can configure for each forum the FROM address as sent to the mailing list. If you don't to set a FROM address for a forum, then the system email FROM address is used.

When changing this option you have to save the settings to reflect change in the settings form.

Default value is unchecked.

[u]Define mailing list destinations and email FROM addresses[/u]

Insert one or more valid destination email addresses (your mailing lists). Separate several addresses by comma. Insert a single FROM address, or leave blank to use the system email FROM address.

[b]Language support:[/b]

This module supports multiple languages.

The following languages are included:

- English
- German (formal)
- German (informal) male
- German (informal) female

If you want to translate the module to a new language, you´ll have to do the following:

Copy lang/english.php to lang/yourlang.php (yourlang.php must have the same name as Phorum´s main language file that you use). After this, translate the strings in lang/yourlang.php.

If you have created a translation for this module, please post a zip file containing lang/yourlang.php in the [url=http://www.phorum.org/phorum5/read.php?62,129244]module thread[/url] at phorum.org, so the translation can be added to the module package.

[b]Sanity Checks:[/b]

If you have problems with this module login as administrator in Phorum's administrative interface and go to the "System Sanity Checks" section. Check for warnings or errors for the Mailing List Module.

The following checks are performed:

- Exists module settings?
- Exists default language file?
- Exists forum specific language file(s)?
- Custom language file(s) contains same array keys as the english file?
- Mailing list destinations are valid email addresses?
- Email FROM addresses are valid email addresses?

I have done quite a bit of work on this module and its friend the "external phorummail" module (technically most of the work was done by an upwork contractor), and I have a version that's ready for testing. It's working for me, but you know how that goes. I've attached the new version to this post.

Basically I added much of the functionality that was in the Mail2forum module that I used to use in conjunction with PHPBB. I needed this functionality to be able to use it in production on my new Phorum site. Here's what I put in the Changelog

2017/01/21 version 1.7.0 by Oliver Riesen (oliver@riesen.org) and W. Curtis
Preston (wcurtispreston@gmail.com)
- Major new version with a lot of added functionality
- Added ability to add subject prefix before sending to a mailing list - used to add same subject back to the outgoing email that would be on an incoming email from the list. This helps messages thread correctly.
- Made the following two (formerly default) actions now optional
-- Prepend Phorum name to outgoing email subject (now optional)
-- Prepend Post details to outgoing email body (now optional)
- Added ability to add signature to end of email
- Added ability to resend email if a post is edited
- Added ability to add a subject tag if resending edited post
- Added ability to add a line to end of edited posts
- Added ability to send email as OP's name, but with usual email address (e.g. Posters Name <usualemail@domain.com>) Can also send as just an email address, the system name, or a custom name.

Minimum required Phorum version is 5.2.11. My module doesn't change any encoding or character set when sending mails to the mailing list. So I couldn't see any error. What's about other mails from your forum (for example moderation mails)? They are okay?

Which language file do you use? The original english file from the Phorum installation? Or did you get some additional language files from this forum? Inside each language file (see folder /include/lang/) you can find one line defining the character set (CHARSET). For a new installation you should use utf8 for all components (database, encoding and character set).
Claro que sí.
I'm using my Mailing List Module with a german forum, so we have a lot of german Umlauts. No problem.
Perhaps it's a problem with your character set in your language file. I think you have to use utf-8.
thanks for this awesome looking module. It looks very promising, but I look for a specific functionality:
I made the changes to email_functions.php around line 241 and installed the beta version of the module and did a test post with an uploaded picture, and it did not work.

I am wondering if it is because Embed Attachments is enabled, and a bbcode type tag gets inserted into the body of the message where you want the image or link to appear.
I'll test it out with something else again tomorrow. I am about to fall asleep.

Quote
Oliver Riesen
1. Phorum developers add attachment support to the send_mail hook (my preferred solution).

Hoping that this solution get grace from the Phorum developers I prepared a BETA version of my Mailing List Module which supports attachments.

Please take care that you have apply the following patch:

Patching Core Function:

The core mail function doesn't support attachments. If you want to send attachments you have to patch
include/email_functions.php:

Open the file and search for (starting line 241):

        $hook_data = array(
            'addresses'   => $addresses,
            'from'        => $from_address,
            'subject'     => $mailsubject,
            'body'        => $mailmessage,
            'bcc'         => $PHORUM['use_bcc'],
            'messageid'   => $messageid
        );

Replace this block by:

        $hook_data = array(
            'addresses'   => $addresses,
            'from'        => $from_address,
            'subject'     => $mailsubject,
            'body'        => $mailmessage,
            'bcc'         => $PHORUM['use_bcc'],
            'messageid'   => $messageid,
            'attachments' => $data['attachments']
        );

Please feel free to test it.

Hi Robert, Hi Thomas,

Quote
Oliver Riesen
Mailing List Module extended but no attachments in incoming mails...

I found the problem: my Mailing List Module uses phorum_email_user to send mails (because I like to use existing core functions instead of programming the wheel a second time...).

But phorum_email_user calls the send_mail hook without passing attachments. So the smtp_mail module doesn't receive any attachment...

So, what to do? I see various solutions:

1. Phorum developers add attachment support to the send_mail hook (my preferred solution).

2. The Mailing List Module catches attachments with the email_user_start hook and uses the send_mail hook to add them to the message array (running with priority before the smpt_mail module).

3. Duplicating main part of phorum_email_user to my Mailing List Module (which causes an obligation to keep this part synchronous to the core function in future releases).

@Thomas: What about solution 1?

Hello, all. Thanks for the hard work you all put in. I've run through all the forums, and the code itself, and I'm still having trouble figuring out one minor issue. I would like outgoing emails from phorum, which go to a Mailman list, to appear to be sent from the posting party, not from the system email default. I have tried "Author as Sender", and it doesn't appear to substitute the author of the post for the system email default when it sends to the Mailman list. I suspect I'm not setting up something right, but this is the last piece of the puzzle for me to move over to Phorum, other than trying to figure out how to import a phpBB2 board. That's another day. Thanks for any help.

Just a bug fix because former versions of Mailinglist Module and Author as Sender Module didn't work for me (because I don't use the FROM address option). Now I have both modules also correctly working in my production system.

Next step will be attachment capabilities.
