MySQL 4.1 support ending

I thought it was worth noting to our users that MySQL AB is stopping support for MySQL 4.1 at the end of this year. You can see the schedule at [www.mysql.com]. Extended support does last through 2009. That is only for severe security issues and only released on an as needed basis. This means releases will only happen if people paying for support or a major distribution push for it.

As for Phorum, we will continue to support MySQL 4.1 in Phorum 5.1. However, given this expiration, I see no reason to ensure 4.1 support for Phorum 5.2. We have no plans to break 4.1 support in 5.2. I am just not going to guarantee compatibility when 5.2 is ready. Also, I will be upgrading this server to 5.0. That means that Phorum will be developed using 5.0.

The bottom line is that everyone out there needs to move to 5.0. If you don't control this on your server, please urge your provider to make the switch.

Brian,

You might wish to update the home page.

Currently it reads:

"Phorum Requirements
PHP 4.3.0 or greater
MySQL 4.0, 4.1"

Because it doesn't say "MySQL 4.0 or greater" while the PHP entry says "PHP 4.3.0 or greater" I took it to mean that ONLY 4.0 and 4.1 were supported -- so it is a little confusing.

I believe mysql.com uses phorum for their forums, correct? I was using them today and noticed it was interesting how they threaded them. It seems to be an advantage to displaying large numbers of posts, but it is hard to read more than one post at a time.

I say this realizing that I don't know much about the display they face, and I could have missed something.

I think 4.1 was a stop gap for getting some features like views out before 5.0 was ready. I think that is why the short life. They did not want users to wait on some things for 5.0.

It's odd that 4.0 and 4.1 support is ending almost at the same time even if they were released 1½ half years apart. ie 4.0 support lasted 3½ half years but 4.1 support only little over 2 years.

Well there's not that much difference between them but I would have expected 4.1 support to end at the end on this year.

Hopefully Falcon will be "ready" soon so there really is a proper reason to upgrade.
