you will have to enter a domain name in the session domain part to make it available for both www.domain.com and domain.com (as the info text on that field explains) - it will work for all subdomains then.

the cookie is only set per domain and www.domain.com and domain.com are different in that regard.

That's correct Thomas, if I try to access the site without www. it behaves differently, otherwise it keeps the session after revisiting. But honestly I don't recall the old one behaving differently regardless of the prefix before the domain address. However this is more than enough for me. Thanks a lot for your help.

I've just tried both sites and I stayed logged in without problems.
Could it be that you tried it sometimes without the www, as both sites can be reached without www. ?

depends on the browser. most often there is something in the settings where you can delete a cookie one by one and there you also see its contents.

Urls point to the same server although with separate domains (not sub) dubaimania.net (old) and abudhabimania.net (new). But the server is the same one, otherwise I'd have issues sharing the same database. How to check the cookie contents I got with my browser?

I never said that the issue were the cache settings, I was just interested in the cache layer you are using. Memcached could have given you problems as both use the same cache in that case.

What are the urls to both forums? Two different subdomains of the same domain?
Did you check the cookie contents you got with your browser?

Sorry Thomas, back to square one. It was a mere illusion. Don't know why it worked twice and now back to the same issue. So maybe the issue wasn't the cache settings in the Admin?

Thomas, problem again solved. Simply I forgot to create the directory for the cache as I did in the old version. Thanks again for your kind help. ;-)

It's the new site. The old one still keeps the session allright. No url info. I close the browser, reopen and shows me as a guest prompting to login. I think there might be a slight conflict because I cleared the browser and the second opening it remembered me. Then I made access to the old site and the new one stopped the session. I can't really understand why and how it is conflicting.

Thomas, all is ok but I am experiencing the first issue. Maybe it's a setting miss from my side.
When I close the browser and open it again I lose the session and I need to relog again, while on the first old site still looks ok.

IN the general settings in regards to the session everything seems ok to me.

Any suggestion what this could be?

I upgraded from 3 to 5 and it worked flawlessly.. It has been running for two days no problems.. I changed a the threading view from 30 to 10 and now my pages are blank...

I have modified two scripts to coincide:
$PHORUM['user_table'] = $prefix . '_users';
$PHORUM['user_custom_fields_table'] = $prefix . '_user_custom_fields';

you want it probably as
$PHORUM['user_custom_fields_table'] = 'dxb_user_custom_fields';
if thats the already existing user table.
And yes, the quotes are needed.

You will have to install the new phorum first completely and after installation (with the different prefix) change the mysql.php of the new install to use the old prefix for the two user tables, not only the custom fields table.

My understanding is that the config.php file will be the same except for 'table_prefix' => 'dxb', which will become let's say 'table_prefix' => 'abc',. Given these premises I understand I should now act on the mysql.php file of the new site and do the following:

Where I find

$PHORUM['user_custom_fields_table'] = $prefix . '_user_custom_fields';

I will edit as follows:

$PHORUM['user_custom_fields_table'] = abc . '_user_custom_fields';

Is this enough or I should enclose it with quotes such as 'abc'?

there are definitions in the beginning of the file.
Change the $prefix to the fixed prefix for the user and user_custom_fields tables. I think that should be enough.

Ok I might understand the solution but then let me prompt one question: Once I define the tables prefixes how do I make both share only the user's unique table which evidently should share same prefix?

You can rename the directory /emerald/ to something like /seventhc/ and then edit info.php to reflect the name change.

Then if you upgrade, a new emerald directory will get created, but /seventhc/ will remain unscathed, and your forum defaults will still be linked to /seventhc/

My templates are SO hacked and personalized, and this is how upgrades don't break my site or undo my customizations.
